About Us

Longden is a small village about six miles south of Shrewsbury. In August 2000 we, the Brown family, moved from our house in Bomere Heath and into the village shop and a new lifestyle.

Who We Are

Mervyn is the one with all the responsibility. His day starts at 6am. and finishes at 7pm., seven days a week. Hard work, but it seems to be paying off in terms of the number of positive comments since taking over.

Gill works four days a week as an Occupational Therapist with children. One day a week she helps out in the shop and does all the yummy baking. Saturdays and Sundays she is usually running around helping with the papers.

Having graduated from Durham, Alistair worked on Shropshire Routes to Roots, a local history education project based in Shropshire Archives, and set up the literary site, The Pequod. In October, he will return to Durham to read for an MA in English Literature.

Kate recently finished her A-levels, and will be heading to Exeter in September to read Drama.

Dot seems to get the 'Star Employee of the Week' award every week. Probably because she's always got a cleaning cloth in her hand and a smile on her face! With her good taste, she is responsible for maintaining our card range, so if there is something you want, ask her - nicely!

Past and Future

We took over the shop on 16th August, 2000. Since then we have made a number of changes, including:

  • Interior and exterior refurbished
  • New and exciting product lines
  • Stationery room, including photocopyer
  • Longer opening hours, including Sunday trading

We are always looking for ways to improve, so please feel free to come into the shop and make any suggestions or send us an e-mail. Although we don't have the resources of a chain store, we (hope) we know our customers and can adapt to supply or offer services that will benefit the community.

Among some of our plans for the future, we are looking to obtain a grant to allow us to build a secure store room which will enable us to stock a greater range of goods and prevent us from running out of lines. We are also considering a new chiller with a wider deli. selection and more fresh meats.
