Access Keys

Accesskeys offer an alternative, keyboard-based way of quickly navigating a website using Internet Explorer 4, Netscape 6 and all later versions of these browsers.

All websites for the United Kingdom Government should follow a consistent set of keys, and to ensure ease of use Longden Stores' website follows these same guidelines. The following Accesskeys can be used at any point to take you to the relevant page:

  • Alt+s Skip navigation links and jump straight to content
  • Alt+1 Home page
  • Alt+3 Site map
  • Alt+8 Terms and conditions
  • Alt+0 Access Key details (this page)

To use access keys on Internet Explorer 4 or Netscape 6 and above, press and hold the ALT key (or CTRL for Macintosh users), then press the relevant letter or number.

To use access keys on Internet Explorer 5 or Internet Explorer 6, press and hold the ALT key (or CTRL for Macintosh users), then press the relevant letter or number. Finally, press ENTER.

Standards

This site has been designed in accordance with the World Wide Web consortium guidelines on accessibility and it conforms with all the rules up to Level 2. Hopefully, users find the site simple to use, regardless of software, experience or ability. To help with accessibility, the following general methods have been applied to the design of this website:

  • All pages and fonts have been tested to work on a variety of screen resolutions. All font sizes can be adjusted to suit the viewer's preferences by going to the 'View-Text Size' menu (for Internet Explorer) or 'View-Text Zoom' menu (for Netscape Navigator).
  • The use of CSS 2 style-sheets to control formatting ensures that users can apply their own stylesheets to control font size and colour if they wish
  • All the pages are written to the XHTML 1.0 transitional definition, to ensure that they will remain compatible in future browsers, as well as being compatible with almost all existing software.
  • Access Keys are provided to allow users to navigate the site more quickly when using a keyboard.

One problem faced when attempting to design accessible web pages is that screen readers and other accessibility tools all work in different ways. Although the pages have been checked using an online version of Watchfire's Bobby, this only gives a rough idea of how easy to use the site will be in the real world. If you experience difficulty either with using software to navigate the site, or for any other reason, please Email us so we can attempt to rectify the problem.

Physical Access

Under the new Disability Discrimination Act, all businesses have to ensure that they make themselves as accessible as possible to all potential users. However, since the shop is very small, it is not possible to provide wheelchair access through the aisles. If this will cause difficulties for you, please signal from your car, and we will be happy to come out and do any shopping or Post Office work on your behalf.

Alternatively, if you telephone through a request for goods, if you live in Annscroft, Longden, Plealey, Exford's Green, Pulverbatch or Longden Common we can arrange to drop these at your door.

And if there is any other way in which you think we could alter the shop - within financial and physical reason - please tell us.
